Do you need a real estate license to became a real estate appraiser?

I am looking to become a real estate appraiser but I do not have a real estate license, will one be required? Also I live in Jacksonville Florida and want to know which is the best school to attend that offer the best training

No, you do not require a real estate license to obtain your real estate appraiser license. These are two separate licenses (one is to sell, one is to appraise) and you do not need one in order to get the other.

In order to become an appraiser, you *will* need to obtain an appraiser’s license. You will have to complete a certain amount of hours of education and experience (requirements vary depending on the license level you want to acquire) and pass a state exam in order to get your appraiser license. You should visit http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/re/freab_licensing_requirements.shtml for Florida’s licensing requirements.

Regarding education, you should look into classes offered by the Appraisal Institute (http://www.appraisalinstitute.com/). I’ve taken a number of classes with them and I really feel that they offer the best appraisal classes. Be sure that you verify that the courses you want to take approved by the state licensing board before enrolling!

***If you are just now starting your education requirements, you should note that the education criteria for licensing are changing effective January 1, 2008 nationwide. You should visit http://www.appraisalfoundation.org/s_appraisal/sec.asp?CID=98&DID=133 to educate yourself on these changes.

Best of luck!!
